While I was growing up my mom gave her best in convincing me that crying does make a difference. She never said things like: ‘oh, don’t cry honey. It’s really going to be ok’. She always said:’are you sad honey? feel like crying? go ahead, you will feel so much better after’. A split second later I was crying my eyes out. And shockingly I did feel better… Or at least relieved. Every time!
This might be one of the reasons why the movies that have stuck with me throughout the years are the ones that made me cry. Movies with absolutely no happy ending. Nope. Not even a glimpse of hope.
Or it might be the fact that I want to passionately feel something while watching a movie, even if it means sadness and sorrow. Don’t get me wrong. I love to laugh more than anything! But honestly, how many real good ‘laugh until you pee in your pants” movies are out there?
These are some of my all time favourite movies (please excuse the irrational sequence which has nothing to do with the correct chronological order):
- stand by me
- breaking the waves
- one flew over the cuckoo’s nest
- million dollar baby
- das leben der anderen
- into the wild
- All dogs go to heaven (I was 12 and I was amongst the eldest in the movie theatre and amongst the few that were actually crying out loud – yes, one of my less proud moments I have to admit and again yes, I should have seen it coming when I read the title)
