dear greek motorcycle rider

26 Nov

Dear Greek motorcycle rider,

Let me begin by telling you that I empathize with you, as riding a motorcycle in Greece along most Greek drivers is the least to say courageous. Thumbs up for having the guts to drive here. I guess you are sort of an adrenaline junkie.

However, I would like to point out a few things just to increase the possibilities of you surviving a life long motorcycle riding in this country (I have my dad as an example who at 72 drives – or at least he thinks he drives – like a 25 year old).

  • Shocking truth no 1: In between lanes is not another lane specifically designed for you. What you seem to be forgetting apart from the obvious – putting your life into immediate danger as no typical Greek driver actually uses the side mirrors to check before switching lanes – you might be the one responsible of causing an accident, where unfortunately you are the most exposed and likely to get really hurt, or worse, die.
  • Shocking truth no 2: Helmets are actually for your HEAD, not your elbow. I can not even begin to understand how you are comfortable driving around with the helmet worn on your elbow. Is it the fact that the helmet destroys the hair do or solely because you want to have the (not) perfect excuse of – I was just about to put it on – if you get pulled over?
  • Shocking truth no 3: Traffic lights are not only designed for cars. Slowing down, checking if someone else is coming and continuing through the red light is not really an option.
  • Shocking truth no 4: Be dressed accordingly – I know it gets super hot in the summer in the city but wearing a T-Shirt, shorts & flip flops only puts you in more physical danger if you happen to fall off your bike

Last but not least be well prepared. In order to ensure your safety as a motorcycle rider in Greece you have to fit the following criteria: be sober, be awake, be alert, be smart & have immaculate reflexes. In other words: be Superman.

Yours truly
