I feel like dr jekyll and mr hyde

29 Nov

I am the best parent in the morning (apart from the days I wake up by my human alarm clock) and the worst parent in the evening. My poor kids witness this transformation on a semi daily basis.

One of the things I have realised in my 5 years of parenting is the power of SLEEP, or should I say lack of it. Yes, I FINALLY (it only took me 30 years) realised why my mom made SUCH A BIG DEAL out of us getting enough sleep. I was angry and frustrated whenever we had to be the first ones to go to sleep in a country where the norm is to put your kids to sleep after 22:00. Now, I understand. 100%.

My transformation looks like that:

06:30 HAPPY parent I wake up, kiss my son, prepare his lunch bag and send him off to school with a huge smile on my face (50% for loving him to pieces, 50% for having the luxury to enjoy a cup of coffee uninterrupted)

10:00 still a HAPPY parent Sunshine no 2 wakes up

12:00 slowly but steadily leaving the HAPPY parent  slightly tired mom tries to convince NOT TIRED daughter to go down for a nap

16:00 leave the happy / enter the TIRED parent  tired son comes home to tired mom and tired (due to lack of nap) daughter

18:00 VERY TIRED parent after having put up with the crankiness of both kids for the last couple of hours I somehow lose ALL of my patience and start saying things I will most definitely regret. I try my best to keep the nasty comments to myself but sometimes it just spills over….

19:00 EXHAUSTED parent (if there is such a thing) usually by now my hero N. comes home from work and takes the kids away from their mother to shower them, give them their milk, brush their teeth & put on their pyjamas while I prepare dinner for the grown ups.

20:00 RELIEVED parent tucking the kids into their beds and giving them the 15 last kisses is great. It means that I AM FINALLY FREE to enjoy the remaining of the evening and what is left from me.
