attempt 342..failed

9 Jan

Another attempt to convince N. that we MUST get a dog went down the drain….But I sure won’t quit trying.

My sister Alex and myself were completely spoiled as we grew up in a little zoo-like home.  No wonder why I am such a strong believer of raising your kids in a household (semi) filled with pets. You get to teach them some of the greatest lessons in life. They learn how to respect and take care of them, how to love them and receive their unconditional love, how to cope with sicknesses and yes, eventually, how to deal with the immense grief once the inevitable happens and your pet dies.

I also KNOW that a decision to adopt a dog is not to be taken lightly. You commit to take care of it no matter what, for hopefully the next 10-15 years. You have to walk with him, to feed him and provide shelter for him. You have to vaccinate him and treat him if he gets sick.

A dog is a companion for life.

Unfortunately we have a very big problem with strays here in Greece and a lot of Greeks are not animal friendly. I blame the wrongful upbringing. But that is just me. If I ever manage to convince my dear beloved husband of mine that a dog is a NECESSARY addition to this family I will choose to rescue one, either from the streets or from an animal shelter. I know it won’t make any difference to the remaining dogs in need, but it will make a difference to the one that will make our family complete. And I am OK with that.

Until next time

I empathise… I know how much you want to have dog, it is soo good for the kids for all the points you mentioned T. Rescuing is so beautiful – more than buying from a store. These are animals that need love and unconditional support from humans who whatever reason have abandoned them. N will come around I am sure. I sometimes love dogs more than people. I cannot fathom why people abuse our fur-babies, it sickens me.
LOVED this post and the photo you placed T. You have one dog friendly admirer on this side of the world! 🙂 xxx

Tatu, I’m trying the same thing over here… I also grew up with dogs and I want my children to experience the same. Let’s keep on trying… Steter Tropfen hoehlt den Stein 😉

Du hast Recht!! we should keep trying…I hope when our better halves decide that the timing has come to get a dog the children will still be home 😉

thank you Jen for your lovely thoughts…I hope N will eventually come around as well…It’s not that I don’t understand his arguments. It is a lot of work, it is extremely sad when something happens to them, it is a huge commitment and we still have small children and our hands pretty full, but…a dog is man’s best friend, right?

We have discussed getting a dog many times. Truthfully, I want one but I am not ready to take care of it. I read A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron. THe book is told from teh perspective a dog. ANyway, it made me go over the pros and cons of a dog yet again.

you know what? you are probably right…I am probably not ready 100% either but I am thinking that there is never the perfect timing. I wanted my kids out of the baby phase before I seriously consider getting a dog…Let’s see.
