the BEST present ever

12 Jan

3 years ago I got the best present anyone could ever get. I was 36 weeks pregnant with Iliana and very surprised that we had made it that far. It had been a complicated pregnancy during which I had been ordered bed rest (very difficult to achieve with a 2-year-old running around) and had taken a lot of medication.

On the 12th of January 2010 I had a nasty feeling that something was going wrong. I called my HERO (if someone helps you save your baby he automatically becomes your hero for life), my gynecologist and he urged me to the hospital. I wasn’t prepared to deliver so although I had my suitcase packed already I left it at home. I didn’t properly say goodbye to Yianni, I just gave him the quick: see you in a bit.

He put me on the fetal trace monitor and realized that she was in distress. It was then decided that she needed to enter this world. I panicked that I hadn’t brought my suitcase (funny how someone reacts in a panicky situation). I told him I wasn’t ready. I said that it is too early. I hadn’t properly said my goodbye-see-you-in-5 days to Yiannis. But we had to deliver. We prayed that she would weigh enough not to be put into the incubator.

At 16:00 I saw her for the first time (I will spare you with the in between details). LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT. She weighed 2 kg 940 grs. What a relief….

She was and always be the best present I ever got. Seriously, what could top that??

Until next time

Happy Birthday ro your lucky girl! And to you too: in the Netherlands they use to congratulate the whole family, something I really like!

Yes, I like this tradition as it reminds the joy the person brought into the life of everyone of the family and it celebrates the mum too (who’s part has been quite remarcable, right?) – Genießt den Tag! Und lasst euch feiern!
